Achieving Consistent Skin Tones in Wedding Photography

One of the biggest challenges in wedding editing is maintaining consistent skin tones. From the harsh midday sun to the warm glow of a reception, lighting conditions change constantly throughout the day.

The Importance of White Balance

Getting the white balance right is 80% of the battle. I always start by neutralizing the whites and then adjusting the temperature to bring back the warmth of the skin without making it look orange.

Using the HSL Panel

The HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance) panel in Lightroom is my best friend. Specifically, the Orange and Red sliders are key for refining skin tones. A slight decrease in saturation and an increase in luminance can often make skin look luminous and healthy.

Consistency is Key

When I edit a wedding, I constantly refer back to “anchor” images to ensure that the skin tones remain consistent from the beginning of the gallery to the end. This creates a professional, high-end look that photographers love.
